Desert Mountain Energy Corp. Welcomes U.S. Department of Energy's Designation of Helium as Critical Material
October 26, 2026 — Leads & Copy — The United States Department of Energy’s October 23 announcement designating helium as a critical material under the Energy Act of 2020 has been welcomed by Desert Mountain Energy Corp. (DME). This designation acknowledges helium’s crucial role in semiconductor manufacturing, advanced technologies, and other vital industrial applications, emphasizing the need to bolster domestic supply chains.
The DOE highlighted challenges such as escalating global demand, constrained refining capacity, and lengthy permitting processes that impact U.S. helium production. In response to the announcement, Robert Rohlfing, CEO of Desert Mountain Energy, stated, “Helium producers across the United States welcome the Department of Energy’s recognition of helium as a critical material.” Rohlfing added that DME began advocating for helium’s critical material status in 2024, engaging with members of the U.S. House of Representatives and submitting information to the Department of Energy and the Department of War. The company also continues to collaborate with the Bureau of Land Management on efforts to support domestic helium production.
This official recognition coincides with growing concern over the security of U.S. helium supply chains and the significance of domestic production capabilities. Desert Mountain Energy remains committed to advancing its helium and natural gas operations located in New Mexico.
