Lexaria Bioscience Corp. Announces Significant Advancements in DehydraTECH Formulation Study with Notable Brain Absorption Improvements
Kelowna, BC — October 15, 2026 — Leads & Copy — Lexaria Bioscience Corp., a global innovator in drug delivery platforms, announced significant advancements from its GLP-1-A26-1 animal study evaluating new formulation enhancements for DehydraTECH-CBD and DehydraTECH-semaglutide compositions. The study highlighted a 566% improvement in brain absorption of DehydraTECH-CBD in one of the tested formulations.
Lexaria has filed three new patent applications stemming from the formulations assessed in the study to protect its intellectual property. Specific details on these formulations and outcomes will not be disclosed as the patent applications are not yet published.
“We are delighted that certain new formulations in this Study achieved our highest-ever DehydraTECH pharmaceutical-grade relative absorption performance,” said Rich Christopher, CEO of Lexaria Bioscience Corp. “These new formulation enhancements should enable Lexaria to achieve even greater performance in the future and help us to stay ahead of competitive oral delivery developments in 2027 and beyond.”
In the DHT-CBD blood plasma results, the ALT1 study arm demonstrated superior absorption compared to Lexaria’s historical pharmaceutical-grade reference formulation (REF). The ALT2 and ALT3 arms also showed strong blood plasma absorption, though lower than ALT1 and REF. Importantly, none of the DHT-CBD ALT study arms showed statistically significant differences (p<0.05) in blood plasma absorption compared to the REF arm, suggesting these compositions could be viable for future development.
Regarding DHT-CBD brain tissue absorption, all three study arms (ALT1, ALT2, and ALT3) delivered superior absorption compared to the REF formulation. Notably, DHT-CBD ALT2 showed a 566% improvement in mean brain absorption eight hours post-dosing compared to the REF arm. This marked increase in brain absorption warrants further investigation, as drug distribution into brain tissue can significantly enhance overall drug effectiveness.
For the DHT-SEMA blood plasma results, the ALT2 study arm was the highest performer. Similar to the DHT-CBD findings, DHT-SEMA ALT2 did not exhibit statistically significant (p<0.05) differences in blood plasma absorption from the REF study arm, indicating its potential as a candidate for future development. Lexaria noted that ingredient differences existed between the DHT-SEMA and DHT-CBD ALT formulations due to strategies tailored for the specific active pharmaceutical ingredients.
Brain tissue concentrations for DHT-SEMA were below the detection limits of the bioassay used in this study, rendering them non-reportable. However, a previous study by Lexaria indicated a higher apparent trend in brain biodistribution for a specific DHT-SEMA composition compared to a Rybelsus® equivalent SEMA control, although that study employed a more sensitive bioassay methodology.
The company views this investigatory animal work as crucial for advancing the performance of its DehydraTECH compositions. Lexaria is particularly pleased with the discoveries in relative brain absorption with DHT-CBD and plans to leverage these learnings and new intellectual property. The discovery of four instances where DHT ALT compositions demonstrated non-inferiority to their respective REF compositions is considered a significant advancement, offering Lexaria flexibility in its intellectual property strategies to support commercialization objectives.
The Study was designed partly to explore alternatives to SNAC (salcaprozate sodium), currently used in oral Rybelsus® and Wegovy® products. Lexaria aims to develop DehydraTECH-compatible formulations with performance comparable or superior to SNAC, potentially creating new proprietary intellectual property and an industry alternative within the competitive GLP-1 sector.
The study involved Sprague-Dawley rats across 11 separate arms, evaluating novel DHT-CBD and DHT-SEMA compositions against historical ones and intravenously administered preparations. Pharmacokinetic performance was assessed through blood samples taken over an 8-24 hour post-dosing period, and drug concentrations in the brain were also measured.
DehydraTECH™ is Lexaria’s patented drug delivery formulation and processing platform technology designed to enhance oral drug absorption into the bloodstream. It has demonstrated the ability to increase bio-absorption, reduce side effects, and improve delivery across the blood-brain barrier. Lexaria operates a licensed in-house research laboratory and holds a substantial intellectual property portfolio, including 66 granted patents and additional pending applications globally.
